UNIT 5 - Evaluation of production

Evaluation of production

In this production we were set a target by our teacher to complete and produce a production for the school which would most likely go onto the school website. This would be viewed by the whole school, upcoming students of the school and parent/carers who were interested in the school. During the whole process of this in both pre-production and midst filming there were many set backs we faced. such as availability of the client, time schedules of the students, finding free time of other students and other limitations that prevented us from filming earlier/sooner. One major problem was the designated groups we decided to be in so that we can get more filming done, thus being more productive. However there were some students who were filming more than others and editing more, so the work schedule was unfair on the people that were doing more work than others. We managed to get everyone to participate and do their fair share of filming and editing. Me and Afsana stayed after school to add some footage and just generally put clips in order so its easier to edit when everyone is back.

The footage we had first filmed was interviews with students and teachers, as we wanted to get them out the way first. we filmed main teachers of the school however some had to be redone as the lighting wasn't very attractive, it being dark and not very well lit wouldn't be appealing to the viewers watching and would "drown" the whole mood and "vibe" of the production. Furthermore, the lack of students in the school did effect us as we were filming towards the end of the year and many students were away on study leave. This would make the school look more empty and we didn't get enough of the A level students as they were very busy with revision.

Also when we wanted to film classes many of the teachers were very restricted about us coming into the classroom with a camera as the students would start to act up. On many occasions some students were very shy of being on camera so they ended up hiding their faces etc. This was a problem so it was very hard to find a class that were calm with being filmed. We did get a variety of classroom shots and students of lower years doing practical work such as Physical Education and D.T. these were the classes that would attract young students wanting to see a difference from primary school to secondary.

Even though it was hard getting the client to review our production as we were going along the way, we managed to get a hold of Mr Phillips and he did review what we had filmed half way through the production. He was happy with what we had filmed so far and we had a few gaps here and there which were eventually filled in. He did tell us to add some reasonable music and make the text the same throughout so its continuous. We had filmed his feedback and reviewed it as we were filming so we could see what was wanted from us as we were going along. This made it a lot easier as we could use that as well as the shooting script as a guideline.

Communication was a problem as well as getting everyone in one place to film was extremely difficult as we all had different timetables. This is why we created a group chat on Whatsapp since all of us have smartphones. This made planning and certain times much more quicker and easier, and if someone wasn't in we could ask them where they are at that exact time. Furthermore, in addition agreeing on one idea when a lot of students within the group, but we managed to get there in the end. Even when deciding who has to come in we had a hard time to decide. However we did in the end get better at our time management as we dd get a lot filmed.

We did have some financial constraints whilst filming, due to us having no funds we were not able to explore and experiment with other techniques whilst filming. If we could get better equipment we would have better shots. however since we didn't have enough money to purchase this equipment we were limited to the cameras/filming equipment the school provided us with. However i do think we done very wel with what we had as we got a variety of different shots and camera movement to portray the school in a positive way, we also used my phone to film as the quality of it was exceptionally well.

Finally the legal constraints we had, as we were filming in our school this meant showing the different classrooms and different subjects that the school has to offer. This meant that when we were filming whilst active lessons were going on, and due to the classrooms having 30+ students in them, asking permission to film them and to see if they were fine with it would already add to the long production schedule we had. And thus we asked for the teachers permission instead of asking each student individually. However some teachers did refuse, and some students were acting childish and kept on ducking whilst we wanted to film them, so we could not use that footage. Although they were corrected eventually and we filmed the shots that we needed, the use of a release forms where only for the interviews that we conducted as they were in front of the camera for a longer period of time hence why we only asked legal paper work permission from them. This was a setback receiving permission from students and teachers.
